Gather the GPS paraphernalia: the Field Book, GPS cell phone, these instructions (Printer Friendly Version), and the GPS all-on-pole unit.

Set up the all-on-pole unit on or near point 1062 (the painted intersection in the sidewalk on the southeast corner of Madison and Prentiss). [If it's hot, you may want to do the preliminary setup in the shade.] Use the level bubble to position the GPS antenna directly over the point.

Turn the receiver (the rectangular box) on: press and release the green "D" shaped button. The receiver screen will then read "SYSINFO". Now release the button. Allow the Rover a minute or two to reset itself, run a systems check, and acquire satellites.

Turn the Ranger (the keypad) unit on by pressing the "on" button. The on button is located at the top right hand corner of the Ranger and is marked with a circle with a vertical line running through it.

A. Open a file in the rover. (Typically you will be creating a
new job file)
On the desktop, select "Survey Pro" and press the return
button.

Either create a new job file:
Select "New" in bottom-right hand corner.

Make sure the screen now reads today's date. If not, input the correct date.

A list of the Rover settings will appear. Your settings should read:
Azimuth Type: North AzimuthUnits for Distances: US Survey Feet
Units for Angles: Degrees*Note-There will be two unchecked boxes at the bottom of the screen. Leave them unchecked.
- Hit "Next"
- Point number 1 will appear on the screen. This is the first point of every new job file. Hit "Finish"
You will be returned to the original menu screen.

OR load a job which already exists:

The main menu will appear. Select "Survey" from the left hand column, then chose "Rover Setup" from the right column.

Set the Base and Rover units: (All commands will be executed through the "Rover Setup" from Survey menu. WARNING! DO NOT use "Base Setup")
Click on "Set Rover":

A warning message stating "You must set the base before you can set the Rover" will appear. Select "Set Base Now". You will be taken to the Base Setup Screen.


*Note- When setting the antenna to the following parameters, be sure the settings selected are for the Base Receiver Antenna. This will be displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Antenna Type: Manual
Measure To: Slant measure mark
Measured: 0.0
Radius: 0.0
Offset: 0.0
*NOTE- When the "Measured" setting is entered as "0", the "Radius" and the "Offset" will automatically set themselves at "0" as well.
Select "Set" when readings are set

You will be returned to the Base Setup screen. This time select "Next":

"Survey Pro" window will pop up: Select "OK":

A second "Survey Pro" window will pop up, again select "OK":

On this screen you will select "Next":

*The Rover will flash a TDS RTK warning screen stating the Rover is over 500m from its base position. This is not a problem. Select "Okay"

The screen will then flash a message stating the receiver is currently not set as a Base. Select "OKAY".

When the base is set, you will be told the receiver is currently not set as a Rover. Select "OKAY" to continue.

*Note- When setting the antenna to the following parameters, be sure the settings selected are for the Rover Receiver Antenna. This will be displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen

FOR THE ROVER RECEIVER ANTENNA your readings should be:
Antenna Type: Geodetic IV GP(P/N701975)
Measure to: Slant measure mark
Measured: 6.67
Radius: (will be set for you)
Offset: (will be set for you)
Select "Set" when proper readings are in place.

Select "SET Rover" from the Rover Setup screen. The rover will set itself and return you to the original Survey menu

The rover will set itself and return you to the original Survey menu.
Check Positioning of System: From the Survey menu select "Control Points" from the right hand screen:

Point 1062 should appear in the Control Point box. Hit "Check" at the bottom of the screen.


The unit will then solve the coordinates of the control points. Allow the Ranger to calculate until the H-precision and the V-precision (at the lower left hand corner of the screen) each count down to .025 or less. Hit "Accept".

Select "Results" from the far right of the screen.

This will tell you the inverse between the co-ordinates you are reading and previously recorded co-ordinates for the control point 1062. If either of the measurements for HRMS or VRMS are more than .09, then you will not receive accurate readings and must recalculate.
Select "Close".

HOW TO COLLECT DATA.
Select "Survey" from the main menu, then select "Data Collection" from the right hand column of the screen.

You will be taken to the Data Collection screen. All point numbering of a new file will begin with point 2001 as the default point and progress up from there (2002, 2003 etc...) Hit "Point" in the lower right hand corner.
*Note that point 2001 will be the white X (point 1062) on the southeast corner of Prentiss and Madison as mentioned at the very beginning.*

The Rover will warn you not to move it while it is collecting data in static mode. Press "OK"

*The Rover Solution will read "Float" until it has fixed its position. There may be some time while the Rover collects data in float mode depending upon conditions. The Rover WILL NOT allow you to accept any readings while it is in float mode.
Allow the Rover to collect until the Solution reads "FIXED" and the H/V Precisions in the lower left hand of the screen read no greater than .025.
When the above parameters have been met, hit "Accept" at the bottom of the Data Collection screen. The Rover will take a count of 10 Epochs (satellite readings) to confirm its position.

You will be prompted to enter appropriate description of collected point. When this has been done, hit "OK" at the middle right of the screen.

Move to the next point to be collected and repeat.
When finished with everything, select Close in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. Then select "File" from the left-hand menu, then use the arrows at the bottom of the right-hand column to scroll down and select "Exit".
